What is World Metrology Day and Why Do We Celebrate It?

Posted by Greg J. on May 16th 2022

Every year on May 20th, we celebrate World Metrology Day. This day commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established the first internationally recognized system of measurement.

But what does that really mean for us? And why should we care about metrology? Here's a look at what World Metrology Day is all about and why it's worth celebrating.

WHAT IS METROLOGY?

Simply put, metrology is the science of measurement. It covers everything from the physics of measurement to the development and maintenance of measurement standards. In other words, metrology ensures our measurements are both accurate and consistent.

At Scales Plus, our focus is on mass metrology, a branch that specifically deals with the measurement of mass. Everything from industrial scales for quality control to precision laboratory balances for pharmaceutical development relies on the efficient and reliable operation of mass metrology.

WHY IS METROLOGY IMPORTANT?

In a world that's becoming increasingly globalized, accurate measurement is more critical than ever before. In fact, measurements are essential for just about everything we do! They're used in trade, manufacturing, engineering, medicine, cooking, construction, and much more.

Imagine if your car's speedometer was off by just a few miles per hour. Or if the amount of medicine you took was different than what was prescribed. Small inaccuracies like these can lead to big problems. Without accurate measurements, our world would be a very different place.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE WORLD METROLOGY DAY?

World Metrology Day commemorates the signing of the historic Metre Convention on May 20th, 1875. On that day, representatives from 17 nations (Argentina, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden/Norway, Switzerland, Ottoman Empire, United States, and Venezuela) came together to lay the groundwork for what is today known as the metric system.

Alternatively known as the Treaty of the Metre, the convention also served to establish the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), an international organization whose primary purpose is to "weigh in" on all matters relating to units of measurement.

Today, World Metrology Day is a chance for scientists, metrologists, and measurement enthusiasts around the world to promote their work and educate others about the importance of accurate measurement.

WHAT IS THE THEME OF WORLD METROLOGY DAY?

Each year has a unique theme chosen by the BIPM. The theme for World Metrology Day 2022 is Metrology in the Digital Era. According to their website, "this theme was chosen because digital technology is revolutionizing our community and is one of the most exciting trends in society today." To learn more about this year's topic, you can read a message from the World Metrology Day directors.
