Load Cell Buyer's Guide
Posted by Seth V on Feb 28th 2020
In the weighing industry, load cells are one of the most commonly replaced parts. Load cells take all the wear and environmental abuse before any other part, as it is the component that ultimately receives the force of the weight being measured. At Scales Plus, we have access to thousands of load cells. We offer a vast range of capacities and styles used throughout the industry. We also provide accessories such as hardware and mount kits. If you ever need help finding a specific load cell, feel free to contact us through email, chat, or give us a call at 616-622-2100.
IT'S BROKE!
So, your load cell went bad, and you need a new one. Now where to start? The best place to start is on the load cell itself. Most load cells will have a label that will tell you the manufacturer, model, and capacity. With that information, finding a direct replacement is much simpler. You're probably wondering at this point, what if the sticker is missing, or what if the brand name load cell is super expensive. Scales Plus can help.
NO LABEL!
If the label is missing or illegible, then things get a little murkier. At this point, you are going to want to find any information on the scale itself that is readily available. If it is a multiple load cell system, then you can check the other cells for labels. If it is an entire scale system and not a custom build, then there will be information on the scale itself to let you know which manufacturer and model.
For the sake of going into this further, let's say its a custom build with no information. You are going to need to establish what style of load cell you are using. Commonly used load cell types include S-cells, single-point, single-ended beam, double-ended beam, planar beam, and canister styles. For assistance on finding which cell you have, please contact Scales Plus.
Once you find out your style, then you will want to figure out the capacity of your scale system. You will also want to measure the thread of the cell and its physical dimensions. With this information, you can start searching for compatible load cells. Keep in mind that many cells will have similar dimensions but different capacities. You need to know the capacity of your overall system to ensure that you don't install too low of a capacity.
PRICE!
No one likes paying more than they have to. If the direct replacement load cell is out of your budget, then let us know. Most load cells have multiple interchange options available. Many manufacturers will include the interchange options on the datasheets or schematics of each load cell. If you find an interchangeable cell, you should still verify that the following features match before purchasing.
- mV/V rating (millivolt/volt)
- NTEP Class and rating (if applicable)
- Seal Style
- Material (stainless, alloy, aluminum)
- Excitation Rating
- IP Rating
- Capacity
- Thread size
- Physical dimensions
- Cable length
- Input and Output resistance
If you need assistance in finding the right load cell for your scale, whether it be for a new system, or replacing a broken cell, Scales Plus is the place to go. The Technical Support line or Parts Department will be able to assist you in getting the right cell at the best price!
